COLD IMMERSION AND TESTOSTERONE: SEPARATING FACT FROM FITNESS MYTHOLOGY
Few claims in the cold therapy space have spread as quickly or been repeated as confidently as the assertion that cold immersion raises testosterone. It is repeated in fitness communities, cited in wellness content, and used as a selling point for cold plunge products with notable regularity. It also requires more careful examination than it typically receives.
What the Research Actually Shows
The most frequently cited evidence for cold immersion and testosterone involves the effect of testicular temperature on sperm production and testosterone synthesis. The testes function optimally at slightly below core body temperature — which is why they are located outside the body cavity. Elevated scrotal temperature is associated with reduced testosterone production and impaired sperm quality.
The logical extension — that cooling the testes through cold water immersion raises testosterone — is plausible in theory but not clearly supported by the clinical evidence. Most studies examining cold water immersion and testosterone in healthy men have found modest, transient increases that fall within normal daily variation. The effect, if real, is small and short-lived.
What Cold Immersion Does Reliably Do for Men
Where the evidence is considerably more robust is in the indirect pathways. Cold immersion reliably improves sleep quality, and sleep is one of the primary determinants of testosterone production — the majority of daily testosterone synthesis occurs during sleep. Cold immersion reliably reduces cortisol over time with consistent practice, and cortisol is directly antagonistic to testosterone production at the cellular level.
The mechanism here is not cold water directly raising testosterone. It is cold immersion producing conditions — better sleep, lower chronic stress, improved autonomic regulation — in which the body's own endocrine system functions more effectively.
The More Honest Framing
Cold immersion is a genuine hormetic stressor that produces measurable improvements in multiple physiological systems. Its effects on mood, focus, recovery, and stress resilience are documented and meaningful. Framing these benefits accurately builds a more credible and sustainable practice than overstating specific hormonal claims that the evidence does not fully support.
The practice stands on its own merits. It does not need mythology.
